What is a bite splint?

A bite splint — also called a night guard or occlusal splint — is a custom-made oral appliance worn over the upper or lower teeth, typically during sleep. It creates a protective barrier between the upper and lower arches, preventing the tooth-on-tooth contact that occurs during grinding or clenching.

Unlike the generic guards sold at pharmacies, a custom bite splint is made from impressions of your own teeth, fitting precisely and comfortably in your mouth. It does its job without disrupting your sleep — and without the discomfort and inconsistency of a poorly fitted appliance.

Who needs a bite splint?

A bite splint may be recommended if you are experiencing:

  • Bruxism — habitual teeth grinding, often during sleep
  • Clenching of the jaw under stress, during sleep, or throughout the day
  • Worn, flattened, or chipped teeth caused by grinding
  • TMD symptoms including jaw pain, muscle soreness, or clicking
  • Morning headaches that may be related to jaw muscle tension
  • Sensitivity caused by enamel loss from grinding

Custom vs. store-bought

Over-the-counter guards are bulky, difficult to sleep in, and not designed for the precise fit required to properly protect the bite. A custom bite splint from Ireland Restorative Dentistry is fabricated specifically for your dental anatomy, positioning the teeth and jaw in the optimal relationship to reduce muscle activity, protect the enamel, and support long-term joint health.

If you have been using a store-bought guard that you hate sleeping in — a custom splint will feel entirely different.

How long will it last?

With proper care, a custom bite splint typically lasts three to five years — though heavy grinders may wear through one sooner. We will check the condition of your splint at regular appointments and let you know when it is time for a replacement. Caring for your splint is simple: rinse it after each use, brush it gently with a soft toothbrush, and store it in its case.
