Root Canals in Ball Ground, GA
Root canals have an undeserved reputation. The procedure itself is no more uncomfortable than a filling — and it relieves the pain of an infected tooth rather than causing it. We are here to help you understand what to expect.

Your root canal, step by step.
1
Diagnosis & Anesthesia
We confirm the diagnosis with X-rays, then numb the area completely with local anesthesia. You should feel pressure but not pain.
2
Pulp Removal
The infected or inflamed pulp is carefully removed through a small opening in the crown of the tooth.
3
Cleaning & Shaping
The root canals are cleaned, shaped, and disinfected. The canals are then filled with a biocompatible material.
4
Restoration
A crown is typically placed over the treated tooth to protect it and restore full function.
What is a root canal?
A root canal removes the infected or inflamed pulp from inside a tooth — saving the tooth from extraction. The pulp is the soft tissue containing nerves and blood vessels. When it becomes infected due to decay, a cracked tooth, or trauma, it causes significant pain and can lead to abscess if left untreated. Removing the pulp eliminates the source of infection while preserving the outer structure of the tooth.
Signs you may need a root canal
You should call us if you are experiencing:
- Severe or persistent toothache — especially when biting or applying pressure
- Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the stimulus is removed
- Darkening or discoloration of the tooth
- Swelling or tenderness in the nearby gum tissue
- A persistent pimple or bump on the gum near the tooth
- Sudden relief of intense pain — this can mean the nerve has died, not that the problem is resolved
Will it hurt?
The honest answer is no. With modern anesthesia and technique, a root canal is no more uncomfortable than having a filling placed. The procedure relieves the pain of the infection rather than causing pain of its own. Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how manageable the experience is.
What happens after a root canal?
After treatment the tooth is structurally sound but more brittle than a living tooth — which is why a crown is typically recommended. Root canal treatment at Ireland Restorative Dentistry is performed by both Dr. Ireland and Dr. Hewgley. Both doctors prioritize patient comfort above all — and both are committed to making the experience as straightforward and pain-free as modern dentistry allows.
Tooth pain that won't quit?
Don’t wait — the sooner we treat an infected tooth, the simpler and more comfortable the process.
