Your bonding appointment, step by step.
1
Shade Selection
We select a composite resin shade that matches your natural tooth color precisely — so the result blends invisibly.
2
Surface Preparation
The tooth surface is gently etched and a conditioning liquid applied. Usually no anesthesia is required.
3
Resin Application
The composite resin is applied, shaped, and sculpted to the desired form — correcting the chip, gap, or discoloration.
4
Curing & Polish
A curing light hardens the resin in seconds. The bonded area is trimmed, shaped, and polished to a natural seamless finish.
What is dental bonding?
Dental bonding is a cosmetic procedure in which a tooth-colored composite resin material is applied directly to the surface of a tooth, then shaped, hardened with a curing light, and polished to match the surrounding enamel. The result is a correction that blends naturally with your smile — often completed in under an hour per tooth.
Bonding is one of the most versatile cosmetic procedures in dentistry. It can close small gaps between teeth, restore chipped or cracked edges, cover stains or discoloration on individual teeth, alter the shape or length of a tooth, and make a single tooth look more proportional to the rest of the smile.
Bonding vs. veneers — which is right for you?
Dental bonding is typically less expensive than porcelain veneers and can be completed in a single visit with no lab fabrication time. It is an excellent choice for minor corrections. However, composite resin is less durable and more susceptible to staining than porcelain over time, and bonding may need to be touched up or replaced every 5–10 years. Dr. Ireland and Dr. Hewgley will help you decide which option aligns with your goals during your consultation.
- Chipped or cracked teeth
- Small gaps or spaces between front teeth
- Discolored or stained teeth that whitening cannot fully correct
- Teeth that are slightly shorter than their neighbors
- Minor shape irregularities on front teeth
- Exposed tooth roots caused by gum recession
What can bonding fix?
Bonding is a great solution for:
Chipped or cracked teeth. Even a small chip on a front tooth is noticeable every time you smile. Bonding restores the natural edge of the tooth in a single visit — no temporary, no lab, no waiting.
Gaps between front teeth. Small spaces between teeth can be closed with bonding by slightly widening the adjacent teeth. It is a conservative, reversible option for patients who want to close a gap without orthodontics.
Discolored or stained teeth that whitening cannot fully correct. When a single tooth is noticeably darker than its neighbors — from an old filling, a root canal, or internal staining — bonding can mask the discoloration and bring the tooth back into harmony with the rest of the smile.
Teeth that are shorter or smaller than their neighbors. Whether from natural variation, grinding, or wear over time, teeth that appear undersized can throw off the proportions of your smile. Bonding builds the tooth back to its ideal length and shape.
Minor shape irregularities. A tooth that is slightly pointed, rounded in the wrong place, or simply shaped differently from its pair can be refined with bonding to create a more symmetrical, balanced result.
Exposed root surfaces from gum recession. When gum tissue recedes, it exposes the root of the tooth — which is softer, more sensitive, and more vulnerable to decay than enamel. Bonding covers the exposed area, reducing sensitivity and protecting the root from further damage.
Bonding is not the right solution for everything — it is best suited for minor to moderate corrections on teeth that are not under heavy bite pressure. Dr. Ireland and Dr. Hewgley will tell you honestly whether bonding is the right call for your situation, or whether an inlay, veneer, or crown would serve you better in the long run.
