What counts as a dental emergency?
You should call us immediately if you are experiencing:
- Severe tooth pain or throbbing that is not resolving
- A broken, cracked, or fractured tooth
- A tooth that has been knocked out or displaced
- A dental abscess — swelling of the gum, jaw, or cheek
- A lost crown, bridge, or dental restoration
- Uncontrolled bleeding from the gum or mouth
What to do while you wait
If a tooth has been knocked out, handle it by the crown — not the root — rinse it gently with water without scrubbing, and either replace it in the socket immediately or keep it moist in a small container of milk or saliva. Time is critical — call us immediately.
For a dental abscess with swelling, do not wait. Dental infections can spread rapidly and in rare cases can become life-threatening. Call us or go to an emergency room if swelling is severe or spreading.
For pain, over-the-counter ibuprofen is typically the most effective temporary relief. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum tissue.
