Gum disease — what it is and why it matters
Gum disease — also called periodontal disease — is a bacterial infection of the gum tissue and the bone that supports your teeth. It begins as gingivitis and can progress to periodontitis, a more serious condition involving the destruction of the connective tissue and bone that holds teeth in place.
Beyond your mouth, periodontal disease has been linked to systemic health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Treating gum disease is not just about your teeth — it is about your overall health.
Warning signs of gum disease
Do not ignore these symptoms — early treatment makes a significant difference:
- Bleeding when brushing or flossing
- Red, swollen, or tender gum tissue
- Persistent bad breath that does not resolve with brushing
- Gum recession — teeth appearing longer than before
- Sensitivity at the gumline
- Loose or shifting teeth
Scaling & Root Planing
When gum disease has progressed beyond what a standard cleaning can address, scaling and root planing — sometimes called a deep cleaning — is the recommended treatment. This procedure removes the tartar and bacterial deposits that have accumulated below the gumline and on the root surfaces of the teeth, eliminating the source of the infection and allowing the gum tissue to heal and reattach. It is typically performed in two appointments under local anesthesia.
Periodontal maintenance
After scaling and root planing, regular periodontal maintenance appointments — typically every three to four months — are essential to keeping the disease controlled. These visits are more thorough than a standard cleaning and allow our hygienists to monitor pocket depths, remove buildup in hard-to-reach areas, and catch any signs of recurrence early.
